Literature Review #5

2. Jacoby, Barbara. “Why Involve Commuter Students in Learning?” New Directions For Higher Education. No. 109. Involving Commuter Students in Learning. 2000.

 3. In "Why Involve Commuter Students in Learning?", Barbara Jacoby introduces the concept of the college transformation process. Students go to school in order to develop their knowledge, relationships, and perception of the world around them. This process however, can only be undergone through commitment and engagement. Commuter students are unable to undergo this process as they only see school as a place for attending school, instead of an experience.

4. Barbara Jacoby is the director of commuter affairs and community service at the University of Maryland. She is the editor of the book Service-Learning in Higher Education. She is a sought-after speaker and consultant on service learning.

5.  Terms
Transition Theory- A transition is any event or nonevent that changes relationships, routines, assumptions, and roles. College is an experience that fosters a transition event.

Social Identity Development- How students understand the multiple aspects of their own identiy, including race, ethnicity, social class, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. They describe how students think about their specific identities and how they understand the intersection of these identities.

6. Quotes

"Human development is essentially a redefining of the self in more complex and distinct ways, while at the same time putting all the parts together in an integrated fashion. Two conditions must exist for the development to occur: readiness of the individual and stimuli that sufficiently challenge the individual to upset his or her psychological equilibrium." (Pg. 7)

"An institution that has begun to evolve toward the final or equity stage takes concrete steps toward treating all students fairly and providing the same quality experience for all. It is probable that no institution at the fully developed equity stage exists today, but some institution have moved sufficiently toward this stage." (Pg. 10).

7. This article has given me the main framework for my paper. The argument that college commuter students suffer because of a lack of personal engagement in their school is important. Commuters are typically known as young adults, first-generation college students, and are generally middle-to-lower class. Since they do not have the luxury have being able to afford living on campus, and have to work to stay in school, they cannot devote time and energy into their college experiences. As a result commuting students are forced into a difficult situation where they are stuck in the same bubble from their childhood. They live in the same hometown with their family and friends unable to grow in a stagnated environment. As a result they lose access to the transitional process Jacoby mentions.
